Since your father has been hospitalized, you’ve been at the hospital every day, having conversations with him, supporting him, and keeping him positive. Now that he’s being set for discharge and the doctor has recommended home care support services, you may be thinking about other things as well.
Recovery may take months.
Recovery can take a long time. Whether it was due to a heart attack, stroke, major surgery, injuries, or even some serious illness like pneumonia, recovery can take weeks or even months. In some cases it could take years. It all depends on the health emergency, your father’s overall health, strength, and a number of other factors.
You might be inclined to take care of yourself, but the best thing that’s going to increase the chances of him making a full recovery, or at least as full as possible, is to rely on experienced caregivers. It’s also important to think about the prospect of home renovations. After all, if your father is weaker than he was prior to this emergency, getting up and down the stairs, getting out of bed, or even doing something as simple as taking a shower may be extremely challenging for him.
What kind of renovations could be necessary?
One of the first things to consider is installing grab bars around the tub or shower surround. These grab bars are not like towel bars. They should be anchored into the wall studs and not just the wallboard. They should be able to hold up the weight of a full grown adult.
Your father might have difficulty getting into and out of the shower, especially if his legs are weaker now. He also may not be comfortable with you or somebody else in the family or even a friend assisting him with this very intimate matter. That’s why an experienced home care aide may be better for these types of scenarios.
A wheelchair ramp may be necessary.
Your father may only require a wheelchair to get him outside the hospital, as part of protocol, but what if he needs a cane or walker? If he does, then getting up and down stairs outside the house may become not just problematic but potentially dangerous.
Making certain home renovations may help your father’s recovery go smoother and lay the foundation for better care and a greater chance at recovery and avoiding a hospital readmission for the weeks and months to come.
