Your dad’s doctor says he needs more exercise. You’re not sure how much exercise is needed every day. You don’t know what types of exercise are ideal. Here’s a look into the recommendations.
He Needs at Least 30 Minutes Per Day
Every day, your dad should aim for 30 minutes. If he exceeds this, that’s great. If he misses the mark, it’s not the end of the world. Many studies have found that even a few minutes of exercise is better than nothing.
The 30 minutes can be spread out. He could take a 15-minute walk in the morning and again at night and have that count. He could walk in the morning, do a 10-minute Yoga video after lunch, and use an elliptical machine for 10 minutes after dinner.
What Exercises Are Best?
Talk to your dad’s doctor to see if there are any restrictions. If not, he should aim for a mix of strength training, walking, bicycling, swimming, cardio, and balance. He can do this by mixing up activities. One day, he could take a Yoga class at a local senior center. Another day, he could swim laps at a community pool. A daily walk is a good idea, too.
If your dad needs motivation, he could benefit from a companion. Caregivers can walk with him. He could borrow a neighbor’s dog or take his own dog for a daily walk. He could see if any area seniors, moms and dads, or teens want to start a neighborhood walking or bicycling club.
Tips for Getting Your Dad to Exercise More
Your dad may be stubborn and not want to increase his exercise. Rule out a physical reason for his lack of motivation. If he has arthritis, pain may be keeping him from exercising. If that’s the case, you might have luck getting him to exercise in a pool where there is less strain on the joints.
Your dad may be more willing to exercise if you join him. Sign up for a Tai Chi class with him. Go walking with him each day, if you live close enough. If you live far away, you could get on Skype video and ride stationary bicycles together while chatting.
Caregivers can help your dad get enough exercise. With friendly reminders on when to exercise and company on walks, caregivers are there for support and companionship. Call our home care agency to discuss services of our caregivers.
